Piedmont. Vietti Langhe Nebbiolo PeRbacco 2019

It is always a pleasure to check on the recent vintages of Vietti entry wines. They consistently deliver top quality for the fraction of a price of some great Barolos and also give you a unique chance to peek into the future and try to predict how the Barolos of the vintage will turn out once they are released.

Vietti, located in the heart of the Langhe hills in Castiglione Falletto village, was founded in the late 1800s by Carlo Vietti. The estate slowly grown over the course of time, and today the vineyards include some of the most highly-prized terroirs within the Barolo.

The turning point for Vietti came in the 1960s when Luciana Vietti married winemaker and art connoisseur Alfredo Currado, who started producing one of the first Barolo crus (Rocche di Castiglione – 1961), single-varietal vinification of Arneis (1967) and invented Artist Labels (1974). His legacy was continued by Luca Currado Vietti (Luciana and Alfredo’s son) and his wife Elena, who have further contributed to the success of the Vietti brand by pursuing quality, improvement and working towards international expansion. In 2016 the historic winery was acquired by Krause Holdings, enabling Luca and Elena to add a number of prized crus to the estate’s holdings.

This evening I was opened Vietti Langhe Nebbiolo Prebacco 2019. The wine is ruby in colour, quite transparent as you would expect with Nebbiolo. It comes to its own surprisingly quickly with vibrant red fruit with a slightly sweeter note – crushed raspberries, strawberries and dried cherries. There is also another layer of herbs, mint and a touch of eucalyptus. The abundance of fruit promises further positive evolution. Tannins are playful but not overwhelming. I would be in no rush to open this bottle, you can easily give it another 3 to 4 years as it has a good aging potential. This is a bottle you should not miss, as it is clearly delivering more than you expect from Langhe Nebbiolo.

Psst: Vietti’s Barolo Rocche di Castiglione 2017 was awarded with 3 bicchieri by the guide Vini d’Italia 2022!
